Zermatt Town life

Zermatt is located in the upper portion of Mattertal and is part of the District of Visp in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is situated at an altitude of 1620 meters at the foot of Matterhorn, the highest peak of the nation, its distance from the famous Theodul Pass around Italy is only 10 kilometers. It covers an area of 242.7 square kilometers.


Swiss cuisine has many international influences, including from French, German and Italian cuisine and also features many dishes specific to Switzerland. Switzerland was historically a country of farmers, so traditional Swiss dishes tend to be plain and made from simple ingredients, like potatoes and cheese.

It is easy to be dazzled by the mountain world around you, being surrounded by 29 peaks over 4000m. These are the highest mountains in Europe.

The Zermatt Horu Trophy rates as one of Switzerland’s biggest open-air curling tournaments, with 76 teams competing on 19 different rinks. Another event that takes place Zermatt Unplugged, a unique acoustic music festival with different stages in the village.

Travel to Zermatt


Zermatt is only a few hours from the international airports Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Milan and also has its own heliport, which is operated by the Air Zermatt company.


We can arrange for a mini bus, taxi, or chauffeur-driven service from your chosen airport to your luxury chalet in Zermatt. Depending on the airport, transportation time may vary but it is about 3 to 4 hours by car to Zermatt.


You can also get to Zermatt by train. The Swiss Rail network is world famous for its efficiency and a convenient way to travel within Switzerland. From Zurich it is aout 3 hours, from Basel about 3 hours and from Bern it is about 2 hours by train. From Tasch you can take the shuttle trains of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway which run between Tasch and Zermatt every 20 minutes.


Zermatt is car free so private traffic is only allowed up to Tasch which is about 5 km before Zermatt. There are parking grounds in Tasch but most of them are located at Matterhorn Terminal Tasch. Some of the parknig grounds have taxi stations outside so you can catch a taxi to and from Zermatt.
